About two years ago, Proximus announced the end of its 3G services by the end of 2024. That date is approaching, what are the implications for you as a user?
Proximus will stop its 3G services at the end of 2024, the company announced some two years ago. Now that the end date is approaching, Proximus is letting users know the implications. With this, the telecom operator wants to invest more time in more efficient and energy-efficient technologies, such as 4G and 5G.
End of 3G era
By the end of 2024, the telecom operator plans to completely move away from 3G. So what does this mean for you as an end user? Most users of 4G/5G smartphones will hardly notice the end of 3G. You will be able to use your mobile calls and data as you are used to. This is because Proximus is abandoning 3G to invest more time in more efficient and energy-efficient technologies, such as 4G/5G. Don’t have a 4G/5G device? Then you can continue to use 2G for calls and texts until the end of 2029.

Data traffic
Proximus further notes that there will be a very limited impact on data traffic. In June 2024, 3G still accounted for less than one percent of total traffic. Old 3G handsets can be handed in at a Proximus store for recycling. Business users using only 3G will be notified in advance and asked to replace their devices with 4G/5G models.
Proximus conducted initial tests for disabling the technology, this without incident.
