According to SoftBank’s CEO, general artificial intelligence is only two to three years away at most. ‘Super AI’ would even be possible in a decade.
Masayoshi Son, CEO of Japanese tech group SoftBank, made the statement during a conference of his company in Tokyo. According to Son, developments in artificial intelligence are moving at lightning speed. “A gold rush of intelligence has arrived. The one who goes fastest will win,” Son said.
The next major evolution in AI development would be “generalized artificial intelligence”: the point where the capabilities of AI systems are on par with the human brain. This Terminator scenario is at most two to three years away, according to the SoftBank CEO. Within this and a decade, we would even get “super AI” that is up to ten thousand times more intelligent than humans.
Think first, then do
Son sees his predictions strengthened by the recent introduction of OpenAI’s 01 model. This model is capable of “thinking” before giving an answer. The answer takes a little longer, but the quality should be much higher.

The CEO asked the model how he could turn 10 million yen into 100 million and got a detailed answer within 75 seconds. Unfortunately, Son kept the answer to himself. The ability to think is an important stepping stone toward intelligence, but of course it will take much more than that for AI to be called our equal. Achieving general intelligence is OpenAI CEO Sam Altman’s dream.
It is no coincidence that Son refers to OpenAI’s models. SoftBank is one of the investors in the recent round of investment by OpenAI. The Japanese tech group, which also owns Arm Holdings, among others, invested $500 million.
