Seagate introduces three hard drives with a capacity of 32 TB. The drives are built on classic CMR technology.
Although Seagate has state-of-the-art technology in the form of HAMR and Mozaic-3 to make hard drives with a capacity of 30 TB and more, the manufacturer is launching three new HDDs based on conventional magnetic recording or CMR.
Three 32 TB drives are being launched within the SkyHawk AI, Exos, and IronWolf Pro ranges. Under the Exos brand, Seagate is positioning HDDs tailored to servers in data centers. SkyHawk is optimized for video, and IronWolf Pro comprises the lineup for NAS.
The launch of the three CMR drives is remarkable because Seagate has taken so long to bring its first 30 TB heat assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) HDDs to market. Now, the manufacturer is surpassing those drives with conventional technology. HAMR does have a future in HDDs with an even higher density, but with this launch, Seagate is illustrating that CMR is not yet obsolete.
Specifications
The three 3.5-inch SATA drives spin at 7,200 RPM and have 512 MB of cache on board. Seagate states that they are suitable for 550 TBW (terabytes written) per year and places the reliability at 2.5 million hours MTBF (mean time between failure). A 5-year warranty is included.
The suggested retail prices in dollars are as follows: 699.99 for the SkyHawk AI, 729.99 for the Exos drive, and 849.99 for the IronWolf Pro HDD.
