PCIe 8.0 doubles bandwidth to 1 TB/sThe new standard is ready in 2028 and is primarily aimed at AI and data centers.
The PCI Special Interest Group (PCI-SIG) has announced that PCI Express 8.0 enables up to 256 gigatransfers per second. In an x16 configuration, this means a bandwidth of up to 1 terabyte per second in both directions.
Doubling Compared to PCIe 7.0
The announcement follows the completion of PCIe 7.0 in June, which offers 128 GT/s and up to 512 GB/s. The new version promises not only higher speed but also improved latency and error correction, although the exact figures are not yet known. Additionally, the organization aims to further reduce energy consumption, an important point for data centers. New connector technology is also being developed.
Available from 2028
PCIe 8.0 will not be completed until 2028, after which it may take years for products to hit the market. This is normal for new standards. However, PCI-SIG Chairman Al Yanes expects the standard to still be relevant by then, especially due to the growing demand for high bandwidths.
According to analysts, data centers will benefit from PCIe for years to come. Around 2030, alternatives such as fully optical connections will be considered, writes The Register.
