The Open Data Institute (ODI) and SAP are launching a joint program to help organizations prepare their data infrastructure for AI.
More and more organizations want to derive value from AI faster, but they are running into the fact that their current data is primarily set up for human processing. ODI and SAP aim to bridge that gap by bringing together companies, partners, and experts in a program focused on governance, research, and community building.
Governance, research, and community
The collaboration consists of three main components. First, an independent governance model will be established, based on ODI’s fourteen years of experience with public-private data projects. This model is intended to provide direction for the program and ensure that standards and frameworks are widely supported.
In addition, ODI and SAP are conducting research into how CIOs and CDOs can make their data AI-ready. This involves looking at various AI approaches, such as machine learning and generative AI, and at data architectures including data lakes, data mesh, and data fabric. The goal is to develop practical frameworks that organizations can apply immediately.

Finally, an active community of SAP customers, partners, policymakers, and scientists is being built. This group will share best practices, determine research priorities, and contribute to open standards, so that companies of all sizes can join the developments.
Quality and accessibility
According to ODI CEO Louise Burke, it is not just the AI model that matters, but especially the quality and governance of the underlying data. Insufficiently prepared data increases the risk of biased AI outcomes and compliance issues. Through this collaboration, ODI and SAP aim to make AI-ready data infrastructure broadly accessible based on open standards.
