Intel’s Xeon 6 series gets two new processors: the Xeon 6700 and 6500P. These are aimed at intensive workloads.
Intel unveils Xeon 6700 and 6500P series processors designed specifically for modern data centers. They are said to deliver on average 1.4 times better performance than the previous generation in business workloads.
Different applications
With this launch, Intel completes the rollout of the Xeon 6 series, which consists of two product families: the performance-oriented P-core chips and the energy-efficient E-core chips, intended for cloud environments. Intel introduced the first E-core chip, the 144-core Xeon 6700E, last year, followed by the powerful 128-core Xeon 6900P in September.
The Xeon 6700/6500P processors contain 8 to 86 cores and target various business applications. In addition, Intel released a Xeon 6 SOC chip for telecom companies and confirmed that the 288-core Xeon 6900E is in production.
Intel’s announcement comes at a time when AMD is gaining ground in the server market. Although AMD’s market share is growing, Intel seems to be strengthening its position with the Xeon 6. The company recently expressed surprisingly fierce criticism of both AMD and Nvidia. That while Intel itself made a 19 billion loss last year.
