“Hyperscalers Will Use 61 Percent of the Global Data Center Capacity by 2030”

The share of hyperscalers in global data center capacity could rise to 61 percent by 2030.

At the end of last year, hyperscalers like AWS, Microsoft, Google, and Meta controlled 44 percent of the global data center capacity. Research firm Synergy Research predicts that this percentage will increase to 61 percent by 2030.

On-premises less Important

In 2018, on-premises was still the most important. Companies still have their own server rooms (34%), mainly to place GPUs for AI workloads, but the growth is slower. By 2030, on-premises facilities would account for only 22 percent of global capacity.

Hyperscalers are increasingly building their own data centers instead of renting them. In Europe, this model is not yet as popular as in the US, as companies here still rent by square meter. What is consistent across all regions are the double-digit growth figures in total capacity.

The rapid growth is compared to the dot-com bubble of the 90s. Critics warn of overheating, but for now, hyperscalers are investing billions in data centers. Fortunately, sustainable data centers are on the rise, as evidenced by a recent round table from ITdaily. Everyone is trying to keep consumption as low as possible.
