Atlas Data Storage introduces a service that uses synthetic DNA for long-term digital storage.

Atlas Data Storage, a company aiming to commercialize synthetic DNA storage, has presented Atlas Eon 100. Atlas Eon 100 is a DNA-based data storage service that the company claims can eventually grow to terabyte scale. The system uses synthetic DNA as a storage medium and targets organizations that want to preserve data for a very long time.

DNA storage

Atlas Data Storage launches its first commercial offering with the Atlas Eon 100, which the company claims to be “the world’s first scalable DNA data storage.” With Atlas Eon 100, the company aims to overcome the limitations of traditional magnetic storage.

According to Atlas, DNA offers high density and a stable storage format. One DNA capsule can hold significantly more data than comparable magnetic carriers. Moreover, the storage method is said to be easy to copy and transport.

Founder Bill Banyai calls the announcement a milestone after a long development process. “We plan to offer new solutions for long-term archiving, data retention for AI models, and protecting heritage and high-value content.”

Potential application domains

The technology targets sectors where data consistency and long-term accessibility are important. Museums, governments, and heritage organizations preserve detailed scans, audio recordings, and documents that often need to remain accessible for decades or longer.

Enterprises can also use DNA storage for business-critical information, such as product histories or datasets needed to explain AI decisions. Research institutions use long-term storage for climate data, scientific images, and other extensive research results.

DNA storage is currently not yet a ubiquitous technology, especially not for PCs. This is due to costs, speed, and the required equipment. With the new Eon 100, Atlas Data Storage is attempting a cautious first step towards commercialization.
