Qnap launches MyQnapCloud Storage: NAS integration and 16 GB free

Qnap is launching MyQnapCloud Storage. Under that banner, the company offers cloud storage that integrates with NAS and backup.

Qnap is launching MyQnapCloud Storage in general availability. That solution is similar to major competitor Synology’s C2 Cloud. Indeed, MyQnapCloud Storage is a cloud storage solution offered by Qnap itself, which integrates neatly with the manufacturer’s NAS appliances and QTS operating system. All Qnap customers get 16 GB of free storage to try out the cloud service.

Qnap offers MyQnapCloud Storage in data centers around the world. Before signing up for a subscription, you need to select a region. There are quite a few European options, including Amsterdam, Paris and Frankfurt. London is also an option. Qnap sees the offering as an extension of a NAS, allowing users, for example, to secure the data on their NAS in the cloud without having to turn to a third party.

Competitive prices

Qnap, like Synology, only charges a fee for the data capacity you want to rent. For one terabyte of cloud storage, regardless of any promos, you’ll pay $74.99 incl. VAT. per year. That’s very similar to the $72.59 per year Synology charges for the C2 Cloud. MyQnapCloud Storage is available starting at 50 GB for $14.49 per year. Qnap does not charge additional fees for data transfers, for example.

The cloud service has some useful features, such as WORM(Write Once, Read Many) support. With this, Qnap guarantees that files cannot be modified or deleted, which is efficient in case criminals try to hold the data hostage with ransomware. Encryption is also available.

It is notable that Qnap and Synology are strongly committed to expanding their NAS offerings in the cloud. Thus, a hybrid environment is gradually becoming the norm for those who prefer local storage. In the context of a good backup strategy, integration with the cloud is in any case a useful plus point.
