OpenAI launches AI agent Operator (but not yet in Europe)

OpenAI’s AI agent is now available through the most expensive Pro subscription. Operator will not appear in Europe for now.

OpenAI since late last year to an AI agent called Operator and is now starting the exchange. Per X post, the company announced that the tool is available starting today to users with the Pro subscription that costs $200 per month. Operator is called from a separate browser window, but OpenAI plans to eventually integrate the agent more into ChatGPT.

Users in the European Union, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein will have to be patient for a while. OpenAI more often hides behind European legislation to roll out new applications in Europe with delays. On Sora, even two months after its public launch, there is still a wait.

Chasing the competition

Gartner named AI agents as one of the most important technology trends of 2025. Many companies are already working on their own AI agents, such as LinkedIn, Salesforce and Snowflake. Exactly when Operator will be rolled out is unknown for now, but its development points to a crucial shift toward autonomous AI systems.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said a few weeks ago that AI agents are going to become “mainstream. Although these assistants have been in development for years, the latest major language models allow AI agents to have smoother and more natural conversations.

The difference between an AI agent like Operator and a chatbot like ChatGPT is that the former will be able to perform tasks independently inside a Web browser. Operator will independently read websites, interpret screenshots, press buttons and enter text: in other words, surf the Web as a person would. That sounds similar to Google’s Project Jarvis or Anthropic’ s Claude Sonnet 3.5, which can work independently with a PC.
