GitHub integrates Claude and Codex as AI agents into development workflow

GitHub

GitHub users can now use Anthropic’s Claude and Apple’s Codex.

GitHub makes the AI coding agents Claude from Anthropic and Codex from OpenAI directly available within GitHub. The new public preview adds both agents to GitHub itself, GitHub Mobile, and Visual Studio Code for users with a Copilot Pro Plus or Copilot Enterprise subscription.

AI agents directly in GitHub

The integration is part of Agent HQ, GitHub’s vision to make AI agents a permanent part of daily development work. Developers can choose between Copilot, Claude, Codex, or other agents when creating tasks. Each agent uses a so-called premium request and can be assigned to issues and pull requests.

According to GitHub, it’s all about fewer context switches. Developers can deploy multiple agents for different steps in a project and then compare how Copilot, Claude, or Codex arrived at a solution. This should help to move from idea to implementation faster, without switching between tools.

Open ecosystem around Copilot

GitHub already allowed the use of different models within Copilot, including those from Anthropic and OpenAI. The direct integration of their agents is therefore a logical next step. GitHub is also collaborating with other companies to add more agents to GitHub, Visual Studio Code, and the Copilot CLI later on.

Access to Claude and Codex will be extended to more Copilot subscriptions in the coming period. At the same time, Microsoft is using this step internally to compare AI tools and further improve GitHub Copilot.
