ChatGPT has 400 million weekly users

ChatGPT has reached a new milestone: the AI platform now counts more than 400 million weekly active users.

OpenAI’s ChatGPT has the wind at its back: in September, the AI tool reached the 200 million weekly user mark; today there are 400 million. OpenAI COO Brad Lightcap shared the news on X, emphasizing that the company serves “5 percent of the world” weekly. So this number is double the number of users in September 2024, which in turn was already double that in November 2023.

GPT-5 approaching

ChatGPT is growing strongly despite the emergence of competitor DeepSeek, which earlier this year caused much discussion about the future of AI platforms. DeepSeek was said to be trained with data from OpenAI and was said to be lacking in security.

Still, OpenAI seems to be strengthening its position. Soon, the company will simplify ChatGPT by automatically choosing the best reasoning models without requiring users to manually select a version. It will also get free speech. In addition, GPT-4.5 will soon be rolled out and even GPT-5 will become available to free users.
