According to Statcounter figures, ChatGPT captures a market share of over eighty percent among AI chatbots. The closest competitor, Perplexity, only reaches eight percent.
What is the most popular AI model? Statcounter has been trying to answer this question since March. The figures leave no room for debate: OpenAI has won the chatbot battle with ChatGPT. Globally, more than eight out of ten AI users (82%) rely on ChatGPT. Since Statcounter began calculating market shares, ChatGPT has comfortably remained above eighty percent.
The dominance of ChatGPT began much earlier. The launch of the first commercial version of the chatbot at the end of 2022 symbolizes the start of the AI frenzy that seems to know no bounds to this day. Since then, Google, Anthropic, and Microsoft have introduced their own responses, but many AI users seemed to have quickly chosen ChatGPT.
Best of the Rest
The closest competitor to ChatGPT is Perplexity, although its global market share does not exceed eight percent. In Europe, Microsoft Copilot is slightly more popular with 11 percent compared to 4.5 percent worldwide.
Aggressively imposing AI on users seems to work better for Microsoft than for Google. Microsoft saw the market share of Copilot increase since April, while that of Gemini slightly declined from three to two percent.

Despite DeepSeek causing a shockwave at its launch in January, only just over one percent use the AI model. This puts it just above Anthropics Claude, which falls below one percent. In Europe, DeepSeek doesn’t even reach half a percent, partly because several European countries actively oppose the originally Chinese model.
