AWS and Google Cloud launch joint multi-cloud service

AWS collaborates with rival Google Cloud to create more stable connections.

Just before the start of AWS re:Invent, Amazon announced a notable collaboration with rival Google Cloud. Both companies are launching a joint multi-cloud service that establishes high-bandwidth private connections between their platforms in just minutes.

‘Connections in minutes instead of weeks’

According to AWS, more and more customers are increasingly opting for multi-cloud strategies. That’s why the new service combines AWS Interconnect Multicloud with Google’s Cross-Cloud Interconnect. This allows companies to set up networks between both cloud environments faster and more easily. According to VP of network services at AWS, Robert Kennedy, this means “a fundamental shift in multi-cloud connectivity”.

Outage continues to resonate

At the end of October, AWS was down for hours. Services such as ChatGPT, Reddit, and Disney+ went offline, reportedly causing $500 to $650 million in economic damage. The collaboration aims to help prevent such issues by providing more stable connections between cloud providers.

Availability

The multi-cloud connection is available in preview in selected AWS regions. Additional regions and possibly other providers, including Microsoft Azure, will follow later. Through the service, customers can link AWS network services such as Cloud WAN, Transit Gateway, and VPC to Google Cloud.
