The Model Context Protocol (MCP) allows you to connect an AI system to multiple data sources. According to Anthropic, this eliminates the need to write custom code for each source.

Anthropic has released a new tool to connect AI assistants directly to the information they need to perform tasks. The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is completely open-source, reports The Verge. This new standard connects AI assistants to data ecosystems such as content repositories, business tools and development environments.

What exactly does MCP do?

MCP was developed to provide a solution to the fragmentation problem within AI integrations. Until now, each data system required a custom link, which hindered the scalability and efficiency of AI solutions. According to Anthropic, MCP introduces a universal protocol that streamlines these processes.

MCP eliminates the need for developers to maintain separate links for different data systems. Instead, they build on a standard protocol, which would create a more sustainable and scalable ecosystem.

Developers can get started today by installing MCP servers through the Claude Desktop app. A quick-start guide is available for building your own MCP servers. In the near future, a toolkit will be released for deploying production MCP servers so that entire organizations can work with them.
