Microsoft Seeks Second Basket for AI Eggs with Anthropic

Microsoft aims to reduce its exclusive relationship with OpenAI and is shopping at Anthropic for alternative capabilities.

Microsoft wants to integrate Anthropic’s AI capabilities into its Microsoft 365 applications, according to The Information. This move is notable as Microsoft has had a highly exclusive relationship with OpenAI until now. Redmond is the largest investor in the company and relied exclusively on GPT models for its own AI solutions.

Anthropic creates the Claude LLMs and is now valued at $183 billion. The company offers an alternative to ChatGPT, which is interesting for Microsoft. Microsoft is struggling to sell its own Copilot solution, mainly because users prefer ChatGPT. By embracing Anthropic as well, Microsoft can theoretically build in more differentiation.

Sometimes Better than GPT

Moreover, OpenAI is no longer the exclusive market leader with GPT 5. In certain scenarios, Claude Sonnet 4 would perform better. This includes, for example, AI assistance in creating a PowerPoint presentation. It’s logical that Microsoft finds such capabilities relevant for its Office applications.

Furthermore, Redmond is no longer putting all its AI eggs in one basket. Although Microsoft hardly has any other letters in its alphabet than A and I, in practice, it is very dependent on OpenAI for its AI integrations. Only for GitHub Copilot are integrations with other models already provided.
