The European Payments Initiative sees Wero as a sovereign European payment method and allows expansion into e-commerce and point-of-sale payments.
Wero was launched early last year to facilitate payments between friends and family in Belgium, France, and Germany. Since then, there are already 43.5 million registered users who have completed over 100 million transactions with a total amount of 7.5 billion euros.
Expansion to Luxembourg, the Netherlands, and E-Commerce
Next year, The European Payments Initiative (EPI) plans to introduce Wero in Luxembourg and the Netherlands to replace iDEAL. The service currently focuses on peer-to-peer payments, such as between friends or for second-hand sales. From the end of 2025, EPI also aims to enable e-commerce payments via Wero, first in Germany and then in Belgium and France.
Widespread Interest in Adoption
Wero has been developed as a European alternative to international payment methods. Initially supported by sixteen European banks, now 25 banks are backing the project. Among others, Argenta, Bank Van Breda, Beobank, Crelan, and Revolut have put their weight behind Wero. Major French brands such as Air France, E. Leclerc, Orange, and Veepee also want to use it. The tax service DGFIP is also showing interest in introducing the payment service in local governments, museums, and hospitals.
In addition to online payments and in-store payments, Wero promises that its users will be able to subscribe long-term to gain extra features such as a loyalty program with merchants. There will also be an option for installment payments. In this way, Wero aims to grow into a full-fledged European payment method that is anchored in our daily purchases.
