At the request of the Ukrainian prime minister, SAP is ceasing all operations in Russia. Oracle had previously made that decision and now officially confirms it.
Russia wants to counter the disappearance of companies and the drain on talent by exempting IT companies from taxes for three years. It also wants to exempt technology workers from military obligations. Russia hopes the charm offensive works, but for now there is little interest.
Ukraine’s prime minister earlier asked SAP and Oracle to cease all cooperation with Russia. Oracle immediately confirmed that it has already halted all its operations.
SAP is now also answering the call by taking action. “Like the rest of the world, we are watching the war in Ukraine with shock. We condemn the invasion in the strongest possible way,” said SAP SE CEO Christian Klein in a blog post.
“We are stopping all activities in Russia in line with the sanctions and on top of that we are pausing sales of SAP services and products in the country.”
SAP and Oracle are not alone. Earlier, Apple ceased all online and physical sales of hardware in Russia. Intel, AMD and chip manufacturer TSMC also halted chip sales to Russia. Amazon, Airbus, Boeing, Disney, Google, Spotify and numerous financial services, oil companies and others have also cancelled or restricted their products, among others. Spotify has even closed its offices in Russia permanently.
