Nvidia shows for the first time a wafer with Blackwell chips produced in the United States. The company is committed to production there due to pressure from President Trump.

For the first time, Nvidia can show a Blackwell wafer that has rolled off a production line in the US. The Blackwell chips were produced at TSMC’s factory in Arizona. The chips form the basis of the company’s latest line of GPUs and AI accelerators and are considered very advanced.

The fact that TSMC is now able to produce such cutting-edge chips in the US is a major step forward for domestic capabilities. President Trump is also critical of the fact that American companies produce too much abroad, and is trying to put a stop to this through a flood of import duties. Under pressure, chip giants such as Nvidia are listening. The Taiwanese TSMC was also tempted to build a modern production line in its factory in Arizona.

Nvidia can isolate itself somewhat better against Trump’s whims through domestic production in the US. However, the center of gravity of global chip production is still in Southeast Asia. In Europe, TSMC does not have factories with such capabilities. An earlier investment plan by Intel for a modern chip factory was put on hold indefinitely.
