GlobalFoundries acquires MIPS to expand AI and computing portfolio

GlobalFoundries

GlobalFoundries announces the acquisition of MIPS. The company aims to expand its offering of RISC-V processor IP and software tools.

GlobalFoundries, a semiconductor manufacturer, acquires MIPS, thereby strengthening its offering of RISC-V processor IP and software tools for applications including autonomous vehicles, industrial automation, and data centers. The acquisition is intended to enable GlobalFoundries to offer customers more customized solutions.

RISC-V technology

With this acquisition, GlobalFoundries aims to combine its process technology with MIPS’s processor IP. MIPS develops RISC-V-based processors and software platforms for real-time computing and AI applications at the edge and in data centers.

For example, MIPS previously launched the Atlas portfolio: a series of compute cores and virtual platforms that enable performance and power consumption optimization during the design phase.

MIPS operates independently

Following the completion of the acquisition, MIPS will continue to operate as a separate unit within GlobalFoundries. The company will thus retain its own customers and product development. The acquisition is still subject to customary approvals and is expected to be finalized in the second half of 2025.
