Elon Musk: “Hey Apple, why do you refuse to include X or Grok in Must-Have Apps?”

Elon Musk and Sam Altman are openly clashing after Musk claims that Apple favors OpenAI in its App Store.

Elon Musk claims that Apple makes it impossible for other AI companies besides OpenAI to appear first in the App Store, he writes on X. By other AI companies, he primarily means his own AI company, xAI, but also his platform X. Musk threatens to sue Apple, although he has no concrete evidence to substantiate his criticism. Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, responds to Musk’s claims, and a mutual, open dispute arises.

OpenAI vs. xAI

“Hey Apple App Store, why do you refuse to include X or Grok in your “must-have” apps?” reads Musk’s message on X. According to him, it is impossible for other AI companies to compete with OpenAI in Apple’s App Store. He also refers to his own chatbot Grok (from xAI) which is not prominently featured in Apple’s list.

The top executives of OpenAI and xAI, direct competitors, often clash. This time, Musk also involves Apple in the story, which has a close collaboration with OpenAI.

No Evidence

Musk threatens that his company xAI would “immediately” take legal action against Apple. He speaks of unfair competition. However, there is no solid evidence that Apple favors certain applications.

ChatGPT simply has more traffic compared to Grok or X. The reason Musk’s applications are not at the top is simply because they are not as popular as ChatGPT.

Apple remains silent and has not yet responded to Musk’s claims. Altman, on the other hand, responds via X with the following: “This is a remarkable claim, especially after hearing that Elon manipulates X to favor himself and his own companies while harming his competitors.” Musk responds, and an open discussion arises between the two CEOs.
