Arm has announced its intention to file a new lawsuit against Qualcomm. Their suit over the licenses remained moot.
The litigation between Arm and Qualcomm continues to drag on. Arm is preparing a new lawsuit against Qualcomm, Tom’s Hardware knows. That’s because the jury returned a mixed verdict in the licensing dispute case. The jury could not reach a decision on whether Qualcomm, through subsidiary Nuvia, violated Arm’s licensing terms.
Disappointment at Arm
Arm states it is disappointed by the lack of a jury decision on this particular claim. “We remain steadfast in protecting Arm’s intellectual property and our ecosystem, built with our partners over more than 30 years,” a spokesperson told X.
In the earlier trial, the jury acquitted Qualcomm of two charges, but could not reach a unanimous decision on the claim that Nuvia violated Arm’s license terms. This lack of a clear verdict is the basis for Arm’s decision to pursue further legal action.
The dispute is over Qualcomm’s 2021 acquisition of Nuvia. Arm argued that Nuvia’s licensing terms were not transferable and that Qualcomm should have renegotiated. When Qualcomm refused to do so and launched Snapdragon X processors with Nuvia’s technology, Arm demanded that the designs be scrapped. Qualcomm, however, maintained that the technology complied with existing licensing agreements.
