VESA enhances ClearMR and DisplayHDR True Black

VESA is expanding its standards with new performance levels to reflect advances in display technology. For example, the standards will support higher brightness and more fps.

The Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA) has added new performance levels to its ClearMR standard and DisplayHDR True Black standard. ClearMR saw the light of day in 2022 as a standard for to evaluate motion blur. The label gets three new levels designed to evaluate motion blur from advanced screens with high refresh rates. For example, 480 Hz is now supported. The standard now goes up to ClearMR 21000.

Peak brightness for OLED

DisplayHDR True Black is also getting a new performance level: True Black 1000. This refers to OLED displays with a peak brightness of 1000 nits. The higher ClearMR standard will be of particular interest to gamers, while the peak brightness will be relevant to professionals such as mechanics.

Involvement of companies
Manufacturers such as LG, MSI, Samsung and Gigabyte support the new standards. LG, for example, is introducing the UltraGear OLED 480Hz monitor, which achieves ClearMR 21000 certification. MSI is launching monitors with QD-OLED technology and DisplayPort 2.1a, which meet the new ClearMR standard. Samsung emphasizes the relevance of DisplayHDR True Black 1000 for OLED and QD-OLED displays, but does not yet announce any concrete products.
