Microsoft Unveils Surface Laptop with 5g

Microsoft is set to sell a Surface Laptop equipped with 5G. The device is a variant of the previously launched Surface 7 with Intel onboard.

Microsoft brings 5G to its line-up of Surface Laptops. Specifically, the company is incorporating 5G connectivity into the Surface Laptop 7. This device was launched earlier this year. The laptop is equipped with Intel Core Ultra 5 or Ultra 7 Series 2 processors and has 16 GB or 32 GB of RAM onboard. It should not be confused with the similarly named laptop with ARM-based Qualcomm Snapdragon X onboard.

The 5G version of the Surface Laptop 7 with Intel onboard features additional antennas to support connectivity. According to Microsoft, these antennas are positioned higher than in similar devices to enable a better connection. Connection can be made with a nanoSIM or simply with eSIM.

Price and availability

For now, Microsoft seems only to plan to bring 5G to the Intel-based laptops as part of the line-up specifically aimed at business use. In the US, the additional cost of the 5G module is 300 dollars, raising the price of the base model of the laptop from 1,499 dollars to 1,799 dollars.

In Europe, the situation is less clear since Microsoft does not offer the Intel version of the laptop in every national store. In Belgium, the company refers to an (outdated) list of retailers where the 5G-based laptop is currently nowhere to be found. This may change, as global availability for the 5G variant of the Intel-based Surface Laptop 7 is only planned from August 26.

We contacted Microsoft in Belgium for local pricing information and will update this article if the company shares it.
