As with Intel’s new chips, AMD is also revamping a slew of EliteBook and ProBook laptops with new AMD chips. The top range may enjoy the new Ryzen 6000 series, while the rest have to make do with last year’s Ryzen 5000 processors.
HP refreshes the EliteBook 805 series with three new models: HP EliteBook 835 G9 (13.3 inches), HP EliteBook 845 G9 (14 inches) and HP EliteBook 865 G9 (16 inches). Those thoroughly comparing the new Intel-based systems will note that AMD systems at HP are marked by the number five at the back of each version. Handy to know when you want to compare systems.
The two larger variants can be configured with up to 64 GB of RAM and offer the ability to change memory yourself after receiving it. The 13.3-inch variant can only go up to 16 GB of RAM which is soldered permanently to the motherboard. Each model also has the new, more productive 16:10 screen ratio.
The entire HP EliteBook 805 G9 series comes with the latest AMD Ryzen 6000 processors. You can add up to 2 TB of SSD storage (PCIe Gen4) and optional 4G LTE connectivity. The models have two USB-C ports that are Thunderbolt 4 compatible.
Focus on better video calls
Under HP Presence, EliteBook 805 G9 models get a 5 megapixel webcam on board as standard. The high recording resolution allows an AI application to conveniently capture you as a participant in an optimal central view, even as you walk around. Furthermore, both devices include AI filters for background noise suppression and to better relay your voice.
EliteBook 605 G9 Series
One step down, HP is launching the new EliteBook 605 G9 series with two models: HP EliteBook 645 G9 (14 inches) and HP EliteBook 655 G9 (15.6 inches). Both models have a traditional 16:9 screen ratio and AMD Ryzen 5000 chips. These chips perform solidly, but those who want the latest technology are better looking at the EliteBook 805 series above.
However, HP is focusing on sharp value for money with the 605 G9 series with inexpensive TN HD displays (less than 1080p). The laptops have one USB-C connector (USB 3.2, not Thunderbolt) and have quite a few additional connectors for those who hate dongles: 3x USB-A, 1x HDMI, 1x Ethernet, 1x microSD card slot and a traditional connector for charging the laptop. There is no USB-C charger in the box (there is a charger with the traditional HP pin), but you can charge the device just fine with your own USB-C charger.
Finally, HP is also launching a new ProBook 405 series with three models: HP ProBook 445 G9 (14 inches), HP ProBook 455 G9 (15.6 inches) and the HP Pro 435 x360 G9 (13.3 inches). The latter is the only Windows laptop with an AMD chip that also has a 360-degree hinge, hence the slightly different naming. The three models use AMD Ryzen 5000 chips and come with Windows 11 like all the other devices announced above.
Availabilities and price
The HP EliteBook 605 G9 series will have a starting price starting at $1,149 and will be available in the US from the end of January. The HP ProBook G9 series will start from $849 and will also be in US stores from the end of this month. The HP Pro x360 435 G9 and the other HP EliteBook 805 G9 models are not expected until April. HP does not yet have a target price for these models and will not share it until closer to the release date. European prices and availability for all models are not known for now.
