Major Windows 11 update causes problems with printers and scanners

New year, same problems

Windows 11 24H2 continues to be chunky. Printers and scanners using the eSCL protocol do not work in the latest version of Windows 11. Microsoft rolled out a patch in December, but the problem does not yet appear to be fully resolved.

Has your printer or scanner been acting strange since you installed Windows 11 24H2? Microsoft reported a problem with theeScanner Communication Language (e SCL) protocol in the latest Windows 11 version in October. This protocol is used to connect between PCs and devices such as printers, scanners but also routers over Ethernet, wifi or usb, without the need for a driver. The problem has been fixed, according to Microsoft, but user experiences paint a different picture.

Users report that since installing the update, their PC no longer connects to the printer. The bug affects several brands and is thus in Windows itself. “This problem is caused by the device not switching from eSCL mode to USB mode, which can cause the scanner drivers to align,” Microsoft’s statement read.

Microsoft rolled out a patch with December’s Windows update, settling the matter for the company. Meanwhile, some users remain without a functional printer. Some readers of The Register report that the connection error occurs at random times, while the printer works normally with a Windows 10 PC. Printer manufacturer Canon itself also confirms that all is not yet resolved.

Kerfstok

Windows 11 24H2 already has a lot on its plate. From blue screens to black screens or 9 GB of unremovable files, the rollout of the update was messy to say the least. Step by step, Microsoft is resolving the issues and Windows 11 24H2 will become available on more devices.
