Proton introduces Proton Sheets: encrypted alternative to Google Sheets and Excel

Proton Sheets is a new spreadsheet solution within Proton Drive that offers end-to-end encryption for sensitive business data. The tool is available to all Proton Drive users.

Swiss company Proton has launched Proton Sheets, a new spreadsheet tool that integrates with Proton Drive. The service is aimed at users who want to protect their data from unwanted access or use for AI training. In this way, Proton is trying to position itself as an alternative to Microsoft and Google.

Unlike Excel and Google Sheets, Proton Sheets offers end-to-end encryption by default in its online spreadsheet. This means that only the user has access to the document’s content, including metadata such as file names. Even Proton itself cannot view the data.

Compatible with Excel

Proton Sheets supports real-time collaboration and includes built-in formulas and charts to visualize data. Users can import spreadsheets from CSV or XLS files and securely edit them within the encrypted system. The tool is designed to feel familiar to those who already work with spreadsheets, but with an extra focus on privacy.

Proton Sheets is part of the broader Proton ecosystem, which also includes email, calendar, and word processing. Last year, Proton launched an alternative to Google Docs and Microsoft Word.

Proton positions its solution as an alternative that prioritizes privacy without compromising on functionality. Proton Sheets targets SMEs, consultants, and organizations such as NGOs and journalists who manage sensitive information. They can use the tool to collaborate with external partners without their data being monitored or analyzed.

Proton Sheets is being rolled out gradually and is available for free to those with a Proton Drive account. Users can create a new spreadsheet via the Drive portal and start working immediately.
