An out-of-band update for Windows 11 should fix the damage caused by Microsoft’s earlier January patch.
Microsoft has released update KB5078127 for Windows 11 versions 25H2 and 24H2. The update includes a fix for bugs that arose after previous updates in January.
Crashing applications
The January 13 update caused certain applications to crash when users wanted to open files from or save them to cloud services such as OneDrive or Dropbox. The previous update also caused problems with Outlook, especially when saving PST files to OneDrive.

In some cases, the process had to be forcibly shut down or the system restarted to reopen Outlook. Users also noticed that sent items were missing or that previously downloaded emails were being retrieved again.
That wasn’t the only problem. Microsoft’s first Windows update of 2026 also caused some systems to no longer be able to shut down or go to sleep. Microsoft also launched an interim patch for that problem, but it was optional and did not solve the broader cloud storage problems.
‘Out-of-band’
Microsoft is now opting for an out-of-band update again. In contrast to the previous digital plaster on the self-inflicted wound, this patch is being rolled out broadly outside the normal update pattern.
The new update is cumulative and, in addition to this solution, also contains the improvements and security patches from previous updates. The patch is automatically offered via Windows Update. In principle, after installing this update, all problems caused by the update of January 13 are off the table. It has then taken almost two weeks for Microsoft to fix the bugs that it caused itself with an update at customers.
