Microsoft wants to completely change how Edge is used with Copilot Mode.
Microsoft has launched an Edge Copilot Mode in preview. With this, Edge is expected to become a task-oriented AI assistant instead of a passive browser. The Copilot Mode combines searching, chatting, and browser navigation into one. According to Microsoft, this is the next step towards a new way of surfing the web.
Proactive Browsing
“Edge anticipates what you want to do and proactively suggests steps based on your context,” reads a blog post. Traditional tabs are replaced by an input field where you can enter prompts to perform tasks, navigate sites, compare content, or summarize tabs.
Additionally, Edge can perform translations, convert units, and summarize information in a single field without needing to switch tabs. Voice control is also possible, allowing users to request information or switch between tasks. Copilot Mode remains optional, and clear notifications are provided after permission when the AI is active.
Competing for the Best AI Experience
According to SiliconANGLE, Microsoft aims to reclaim market share from Google (Chrome), which recently started using AI summaries. Perplexity is also trying to dethrone the market leader with the launch of its browser Comet.
The Copilot Mode in Edge is free to use for all users on Windows and MacOS. Most features are already live, but the more advanced ones will only be made available in future updates.
