LibreOffice 25.8 Gets Better Performance and Microsoft Compatibility

The latest version of LibreOffice offers improved performance, enhanced compatibility with Microsoft Office files, and new features for end users.

With LibreOffice 25.8, LibreOffice launches a new version of its free alternative to Microsoft Office. Local data processing and privacy remain central as always. Specifically, this version offers increased performance and better compatibility with the competition.

For example, LibreOffice 25.8 starts up to 30 percent faster for Writer and Calc. Scrolling through large documents is also smoother, which is especially noticeable on less powerful devices such as thin clients and virtual desktops. Additionally, memory management has been optimized.

The interface offers new personalization options through the redesigned welcome screen. Users can more easily choose between different UI layouts and visual themes.

Compatibility

Compatibility with Microsoft Office files has also been improved. There are improvements in hyphenation and spacing for DOCX files, font management in Impress is better aligned with PowerPoint, and Calc now supports several new functions, including CHOOSECOLS, TEXTSPLIT, and WRAPROWS.

Extensions for advanced use and customized support

In addition to the most notable changes, extra functionalities have been added. LibreOffice 25.8 now supports export to PDF 2.0 and includes new services in the ScriptForge library.

Users who collaborate via their own cloud environment maintain control over their data with this version thanks to local execution and integration possibilities. The software does not collect user data and does not require an internet connection to function fully. LibreOffice likes to emphasize that important difference from Microsoft Office.

Support for older operating systems is changing: LibreOffice 25.8 no longer works on Windows 7, 8/8.1, or 32-bit systems. It is also the last version compatible with macOS 10.15.
