Google is making its AI coding tool public to individual users worldwide to make its coding assistant widely accessible.
Gemini Code Assist is now free for individual users. Google announced via a blog post that Gemini Code Assist is available for individuals in public preview. The company wants to make its coding assistant more accessible, targeting mainly students or hobby developers.
The free version offers 90 times more code additions per month than other popular free coding assistants, and supports more than 20 programming languages. Users can install Gemini Code Assist in Visual Studio Code, GitHub or JetBrains IDEs.
“Unlimited capacity”
“Other popular free coding assistants have usage limits with typically 2,000 code completions per month, with Gemini Code Assist we offer unlimited capacity with up to 180,000 code completions per month,” said Ryan J. Salva Senior Director of Product Management in a blog post. He describes this as “a ceiling so high that even today’s most dedicated professional developers would have a hard time exceeding it.”
Like the business version, Gemini Code Assist is supported by Gemini 2.0 and functions in more than 20 programming languages. The coding tool can generate code blocks or assist in coding through a chatbot. This free coding assistant can be installed in Visual Studio Code’s developer environment, GitHub and JetBrains.
Gemini Code Assist for GitHub
In addition, Google is introducing the public preview of Gemini Code Assist for GitHub, which provides free AI-driven code reviews for both public and private repositories. Code review is a critical but time-consuming part of software development. With Gemini Code Assist for GitHub, developers get a helping hand that can detect problems and bugs and automatically suggest code changes and fixes.
