Android 17 beta rollout delayed & developers get separate Canary channel

Developers will no longer receive separate releases starting from the Android 17 beta release.

Google will soon roll out the first Android 17 beta and is simultaneously overhauling the development model with a permanent Canary channel for new APIs and features. The release was originally scheduled for February 11, but according to Androidcentral , Google appears to have postponed it.

Canary channel for developers

With Android 17, Google is discontinuing separate developer previews. Instead, there will be a continuous Canary channel, similar to the approach used for Google Chrome Canary builds. New APIs and platform features will now become available as soon as they pass internal testing. Updates will be delivered over the air, which Google says enables better-integrated testing workflows.

Google is aiming for platform stability in March, with a final release of Android 17 in the second quarter of 2026. The two-part annual calendar remains: a major SDK release in the first half of the year and a smaller update later in the year. This should help OEMs roll out updates faster and limit fragmentation.

Better support for tablets

Android 17 limits the ability for apps to ignore screen size rules. Developers can no longer force screen orientation and window size on larger screens, ensuring apps work more consistently on tablets and foldables. In terms of camera functionality, Android 17 adds new APIs for faster camera switching, support for the VVC codec (H.266), and stricter rules for background audio. Additionally, there are performance improvements, fewer dropped frames, and enhanced Wi-Fi connectivity with more secure peer discovery.

For development teams, the new release should primarily mean faster access to new platform capabilities and fewer surprises in later releases.
