Microsoft wants to work toward a password-free future, so it announced enhanced passkey support for Windows 11.
One of the most notable new features announced by Microsoft is support for third-party passkey applications, such as 1Password or Bitwarden. That will make syncing the same passkeys across different Windows 11 devices easier.
Exit passwords, welcome passkeys
The Windows Hello user experience is also being completely revamped to simplify the passkey creation process. When a user visits a website that supports passkeys, the system will prompt them to store their passkey in their Microsoft account or in an alternative third-party application. Microsoft stresses that passkeys are protected with end-to-end encryption. According to Android Authority, the passwords remain secure even if a device is compromised.
The heyday of the classic password seems all but over, as more and more companies are using passkeys. Recently, Microsoft, Google, Meta and Apple introduced the use of passkeys, bypassing “regular” passwords. This is not surprising, as passwords have long been found to be infallible. Passkeys, on the other hand, consist of two login keys: one public and one private. These are generated in an authenticator, such as Google’s.
Microsoft plans to roll out these new features to Windows 11 users in the near future, with earlier access through the Windows Insider program. When it will be Europe’s turn has not yet been communicated.
