Toyota compulsorily lays off work after cyber attack on supplier

Toyota

Toyota is temporarily halting production at one in three of its plants today. The automaker itself explains that the decision is being made out of necessity, as one of its suppliers has been hacked.

Kojima Industries, supplier of auto parts to Toyota, has been hit by a cyber attack. This makes it impossible for the company to keep up with deliveries. Feeling that impact, Toyota decided to temporarily close one-third of its plants on Tuesday, according to Reuters.

After the hack, Toyato decided to shut down production at all of its Japanese plants. In total, the automaker has 14 plants there, accounting for 28 production lines. It is uncertain whether the shutdown will last longer than one day. Due to the shutdown, Toyota will not be able to produce 13,000 cars today.

Possible Russian interference

Fumio Kishida, prime minister of Japan, announced that the government will investigate whether Russia is responsible for the hack. The incident occurs just after Japan joined Western allies and put a heel on Russia.

On Sunday, the prime minister announced that Japan would do its part to block Russia from the international banking communication system, Swift. Furthermore, the country is donating $100 million in emergency aid to Ukraine.
