Google Cloud simplifies security with Unified Security: a platform that brings together all its security capabilities and tools, powered by AI.

During Cloud Next, Google introduces its new Unified Security solution, a platform that brings together security tools. Google Cloud aims to address the growing complexity and fragmentation of data in modern IT environments. New AI agents and functions specialized in cloud security strengthen the approach.

The platform brings together data from networks, endpoints, cloud environments, and applications into a searchable security structure. It automatically integrates the most recent threat intelligence from Google.

Gemini as the Engine

A reference to Gemini cannot be missing in a Google announcement. Gemini is the engine that powers the Unified Security platform with automated analyses and detection. But all security tools in Google’s arsenal work together. Chrome Enterprise provides browser telemetry to the platform for better threat detection, while Security Command Center links cloud risks to current threat intelligence.

The Security Command Center, in turn, ensures the security of AI models. Google launches AI security in the form of Model Armor, a feature that protects AI prompts and responses. Google also looks ahead: with the Risk Protection Program, it aims to anticipate future threats related to AI and quantum computers.

Following Microsoft’s Lead

By putting all its knowledge and capabilities into one platform, Google Cloud wants to show that it can be a security specialist. Despite substantial investments and acquisitions, Google is not yet taken seriously in this market, while major competitor Microsoft has managed to build one of the most lucrative security portfolios. This grates on Google.

After acquiring Mandiant in 2021 and recently Wiz, Google carefully expanded its security portfolio, although Wiz was brought on board to securely connect multi-cloud environments. Unified Security represents the next step, by making all security tools available from one central platform.

The approach is similar to Microsoft’s, especially with the focus on AI as the driving force. Microsoft is strongly committed to Security Copilot, an AI assistant trained as a security agent. In Google’s vision, Gemini takes on the same role within its cloud.
