Blue Origin is launching a new satellite network, TeraWave, which should offer data speeds of up to 6 Tbps.

Blue Origin, Jeff Bezos’ space company, announced its plans to launch a new satellite network called TeraWave. This puts the company in competition with Starlink, Elon Musk’s space company. “This network will serve tens of thousands of business, data center and government users who need reliable connectivity for critical operations,” the company said.

According to the company, the TeraWave satellite communication network should be able to deliver symmetrical data speeds of up to 6 terabits per second worldwide. The rollout is expected to start in the fourth quarter of 2027 and will focus on business, data center and government customers.

6 Tbps per second

TeraWave consists of 5,408 satellites that are optically connected to each other. It is a combination of 5,280 satellites in low Earth orbit (LEO) and 128 satellites in a medium Earth orbit (MEO).

Blue Origin states that this multi-orbit design should ensure continuous connections between global hubs and multi-gigabit connections for end users, particularly in remote, rural and suburban areas. Additional fiber optic paths are often expensive, difficult to implement, or slow to deploy there.

Project Kuiper

This is not the first time that the Amazon CEO has operated such satellite constellations. In March 2025, the company launched ‘Project Kuiper’, which is now known as ‘Amazon Leo’. According to Bezos, Leo will eventually consist of 3,000 satellites rotating in a low orbit around the earth. This project is primarily aimed at consumers and companies that are satisfied with standard network speeds.

The combination of these services ensures that Blue Origin ends up in Starlink’s path. Musk’s company currently dominates the satellite market, but that could change.

“TeraWave addresses the unmet needs of customers looking for higher throughput, symmetrical upload/download speeds, more redundancy and rapid scalability,” the company said.
