Gartner: “AI Influences Half of Business Decisions by 2027”

AI agents will soon be involved in business decisions, Gartner predicts.

By 2027, half of all business decisions will be supported or automated by AI agents. This is according to predictions by Gartner, presented at the Data & Analytics Summit in Sydney. The research firm also warns of increasing risks around synthetic data and emphasizes the importance of AI literacy among executives.

AI Agents and Synthetic Data Require Strong Governance

Gartner states that so-called “decision intelligence”, a combination of data, analytics, and AI, increasingly supports complex decisions. AI agents can play a role in this by automating analyses and data collection. However, their effectiveness strongly depends on good governance and risk management. Without human knowledge and data literacy, errors remain possible.

Additionally, Gartner predicts that 60 percent of data and analytics leaders will experience critical problems managing synthetic data by 2027. This data, often generated for AI training, offers benefits such as privacy protection and variation, but also brings risks. Without accurate representation and correct integration, AI models can become error-prone. According to Gartner, metadata plays a key role in managing these risks.

AI Literacy Becomes Important

Companies that invest in AI literacy among their executives will, according to Gartner, perform on average 20 percent better than competitors who don’t. Executives need to better understand AI to make responsible decisions about future investments. Practical training programs with prototypes can help with this.

Gartner also points out the importance of semantically correct data. Poor semantics lead to inaccurate results and higher costs in generative AI. Organizations that focus their data management on active metadata can achieve up to 80 percent higher model accuracy and 60 percent lower costs.

Furthermore, Gartner expects that by 2029, one in ten boards will use AI to evaluate strategic decisions made by executives. This underscores the importance of clear guidelines for AI use and governance at the highest level of the organization.
