Data cable between Finland and Germany is faulty

The undersea data cable in the Baltic Sea between Finland and Germany has broken down. The cable between Lithuania and Sweden has also been damaged.

The data cable that runs for nearly 1,200 kilometers from the Finnish capital Helsinki to the German port city of Rost is not intact as of this morning. The exact cause is still under investigation.

Sabotage or not?

The cable break was caused by an external factor in Swedish waters, Belga knows. It could be an anchor or a trawl, for example. With growing global conflicts, there is more fear of cyberattacks or attacks on (data) infrastructure, but at the moment it is not yet clear whether it may be sabotage.

Ten meters away, a data cable between Lithuania and Sweden was also damaged. That noted Cinia, the largest telecom company in Lithuania. The damage has no impact on Finnish Internet traffic because several cables run through Sweden into Finland.

Both the German and Finnish governments are reacting with great concern to the incident. Recovery works are now in full swing. How long those works will take is unclear.
