AMD introduces the Epyc Embedded 4005 processor series, a new chip family aimed at low-latency applications in network security and industrial edge servers.

AMD launches Epyc Embedded 4005. This processor series is closely related to the previously launched Epyc 4005 series. With those chips, AMD targeted smaller businesses with more modest budgets. The lightweight design of the server processors is now being repurposed in Embedded variants.

Specifications

The Epyc Embedded 4005 processors are designed for use in edge hardware where low latency, energy efficiency, and long-term availability are key. This includes network equipment such as firewalls or real-time industrial control systems. Like their cousins, the chips are based on the Zen 5 architecture and support up to 16 cores and 32 threads.

In terms of connectivity, the chips support PCIe Gen 5 with 28 lanes and 11 root ports. This enables the integration of network cards, storage, or other expansions. DDR5 memory is supported up to 5600 MT/s over a 128-bit memory bus. Finally, the chips have up to 128 MB of L3 cache. These specifications are not coincidentally in line with the non-embedded Epyc 4005 CPUs.

Long-term Support

The Embedded 4005 series is suitable for embedded applications that require not only performance but also long product lifecycles. AMD promises component availability for at least seven years. Furthermore, the chips support ECC memory and other RAS (Reliability, Availability, Serviceability) features such as PCIe-level error detection.

The processors use the AM5 socket platform, which is compatible with other EPYC generations. This allows developers to reuse existing designs and simplifies the transition to new generations. The TDP values are configurable between 65 and 170 watts.
