OVHcloud Aims to Make VMware Affordable Again for SMEs

OVHcloud introduces Public VCF as-a-Service. It’s a managed VMware solution designed to remain affordable for SMEs and IT service providers.

OVHcloud has launched a new managed cloud solution based on VMware Cloud Director: Public VCF (VMware Cloud Foundation)-as-a-Service. The service is specifically aimed at small and medium-sized enterprises and managed service providers (MSPs) looking to modernize their existing VMware infrastructure without drastic changes or high costs.

The solution runs on shared hardware, which lowers the price. Public VCF as-a-Service offers a starter package with 16 vCPUs, 64 GB RAM, and 1 TB storage space for 299 euros per month, excluding VAT.

Scalable

The service supports dynamic resource allocation, allowing organizations to flexibly assign their computing power to virtual machines. Additional capacity is easily scalable through supplementary packs.

Public VCF-as-a-Service is designed within a multi-tenant architecture and comes with a 99.95 percent SLA. OVHcloud also promises guaranteed bandwidth up to 5 Gbps, both public and private, without additional costs per gigabyte consumed.

Alternative to Expensive Licenses

The launch comes at a time when many VMware users are affected by changes in licensing policies following VMware’s acquisition by Broadcom.

Especially (relatively) smaller companies are experiencing difficulties in maintaining their existing architecture at a manageable cost. OVHcloud positions its offering as a way to ensure that continuity, without customers having to completely revise their applications or infrastructure.

Public VCF as-a-Service supports rapid migrations from existing VMware environments such as SDDC or VCD. The solution comes with pre-configured images and backup capabilities via Veeam. OVHcloud says it will add new features to the service in the coming months.

No Complex Migration

The main advantage is that customers don’t need to implement a complex migration of their own expensive VMware environment. Companies affected by the sharply increased license costs and artificial bundling of VMware solutions find themselves at an impasse, but often have no option other than to pay. OVH now offers a middle ground where the VMware environment remains but the price can become manageable again.

The service runs in data centers that are ISO 27001 certified. According to OVHcloud, the solution is hosted in energy-efficient data centers with water cooling and low PUE and WUE values. As the largest European cloud player, the French OVH prides itself on the quality of its data centers.

Public VCF as-a-Service is now available in Europe, Canada, and the United States. A more advanced starter package with additional network and security features is coming soon, priced at 375 euros per month.
