OpenAI is going to increase the price of ChatGPT

A ChatGPT subscription could cost 22 euros a month by the end of this year. Over the next five years, that price could double again.

Today you pay twenty euros a month for a subscription to ChatGPT, but that may soon change. New York Times noted plans to change ChatGPT’s prices in documents for investors. A price hike could happen this year, from 20 euros to 22 euros per month.

In particular, expect to pay substantially more for ChatGPT Plus in the coming years. By 2029, the paid formula could cost as much as $44 a month, writes New York Times. There are no indications that the free version would disappear, but for additional features, capacity and security, you will have to pay. A paid subscription is necessary for companies to allow ChatGPT to be used securely by employees.

High cost

You don’t have to go too far to find the reason behind the alleged price increases. ChatGPT is costing OpenAI tons of money, literally. Although the revenue OpenAI derives from the chatbot has increased 1,700 percent since the beginning of 2023 to $3.7 billion a year, according to New York Times analysts, the company will turn around a $5 billion loss this year.

So the cloud infrastructure OpenAI needs to keep ChatGPT active around the clock is costing the company far more money than subscription revenue brings in. Moreover, OpenAI is further and further transforming itself from a nonprofit research organization into a commercial company, resulting in a drain on company executives. As a result, it will be judged increasingly strictly on its profitability by investors.

The right price

As the price of ChatGPT rises, it will have to be seen how much consumers and business users are willing to pay for the chatbot. A study by Bloomberg in 2023 already showed that many users already find the current price of $20 per month too high. In particular, young users (16 to 34 years old) do not appear to want to pay much more for a ChatGPT subscription.
