OpenAI Finally Ends Confusion, Bundles Similar Models into One Model.
OpenAI has been working on GPT-5, the long-awaited successor to GPT-4, for a while and confirms that the new model will be released this summer. The main promise: to put an end to the confusion between the different model series that ChatGPT currently offers.
One Model to Do Everything
ChatGPT has too many models for different tasks, and it is unclear to users which model can do what. For example, there are models with strong reasoning capabilities (such as the “o” models) and models that are multimodal (such as GPT-4 and GPT-4o). OpenAI wants to bring both worlds together in GPT-5. “We are not only pushing a new boundary with GPT-5, we are also uniting our two series,” says Romain Huet, Head of Developer Experience at OpenAI.
Smarter, Faster, and Simpler
The goal is to offer a single model that both reasons and switches between text, image, and speech. OpenAI’s VP Jerry Tworek calls GPT-5 a “fundamentally new model that should do everything better than what we offer today without having to switch models.” It is not yet known when users can get started with it, but CEO Sam Altman suspects that the rollout will begin this summer, writes Bleeping Computer.
