Google expands NotebookLM integration in Gemini to business and educational users

Google is rolling out the connection between NotebookLM and Gemini to Workspace accounts this week, allowing businesses and schools to base AI conversations on their own documentation and knowledge sources.

Connecting Gemini to your own research data

NotebookLM is known for its ‘source grounding’. The answers are based exclusively on documents that users upload themselves, such as PDFs, Google Docs, and research reports. By now adding these notebooks directly as a source in Gemini, Google combines that controlled approach with the broader creative and analytical capabilities of the Gemini platform.

New possibilities for professionals and students

Via the “+” button in the prompt field, users can link a NotebookLM notebook to their Gemini chat. This makes it possible to generate project proposals, lesson plans, or reports based on internal data. Users can deploy Gemini Canvas to transform information into prototypes, infographics, or code projects. Additionally, the integration supports in-depth research and self-study, for example by having Gemini ask questions about your own notes.

Management via Admin Console

For IT and educational administrators, it’s important that the feature is controlled via the NotebookLM setting in the Admin Console and not via Gemini itself. If NotebookLM is disabled, the option will not appear in Gemini either. Google advises administrators to consult the Generative AI Privacy Hub to check compliance requirements.

The rollout for Workspace accounts started on January 20 and will be completed worldwide in the coming days.
