OpenAI wants to further integrate ChatGPT into MacOS and needs the knowledge of the developers of Mac app Sky to do so.

OpenAI has acquired Software Applications Incorporated, the company behind the new Mac automation app Sky. Software Applications Incorporated developed Workflows, the iOS app that was acquired by Apple and later renamed Shortcuts.

Smart Automation with AI Agents

Sky was launched this year as a powerful AI assistant for macOS. This assistant understands what is happening on your screen and can then independently perform actions in other apps. “Whether you’re chatting, writing, planning, or coding, Sky understands what’s on your screen and can take action through your apps,” the company says.

OpenAI says it wants to incorporate Sky’s macOS integration and product design into ChatGPT. This should make the chatbot work better in MacOS. The entire team of Software Applications Incorporated is moving to OpenAI.

Apple & AI

With this acquisition, OpenAI wants to strengthen its position in the rapidly growing market of AI agents. Apple is working on similar functions for a renewed version of Siri that can also perform tasks autonomously. This is not expected until the spring of 2026.

OpenAI is once again taking a lead over Apple with this move. The company recently introduced the integration of external applications for ChatGPT, allowing the chatbot to already perform actions in those apps.
