EU wraps up Amazon state aid case: no back taxes

Amazon no longer has to fear back taxes. The European Commission is wrapping up the state aid case.

The European Commission today issued a decision regarding Amazon’s state aid case. The investigation dates back to 2017, when the Commission concluded that Luxembourg, where Amazon’s EU office is located, had given illegal tax breaks to Amazon. The EU now announces that it is ending the state aid case, and Amazon will not have to pay back taxes.

Back taxes

No one likes to pay taxes, including Amazon. In 2017, the European Commission revealed that Luxembourg had given Amazon illegal tax breaks worth €250 million. The judges annulled the decision, the Commission said in a press release. Apple got off less well recently, being fined 13 billion euros for an unfair tax break in Ireland;

But there is less good news for Amazon. The European Commission is currently conducting an investigation of Amazon under the Digital Markets Act to determine whether the online retailer gave priority to its own branded products in its online marketplace.
