Setting a Charge Limit for your Laptop’s Battery in Windows 11

Setting a Charge Limit for your Laptop’s Battery in Windows 11

You can make your battery last longer by not always fully charging it. Therefore, it’s best to set a charge limit.

A charge limit helps extend the lifespan of your battery. By not always charging the battery to 100 percent, you reduce long-term wear. Many modern laptops have built-in options to set this via the BIOS or through a brand-specific utility.

  • Check if your laptop supports charge limits

Not all laptops natively have an option to limit the charge. Manufacturers that typically support this include Lenovo (Lenovo Vantage), ASUS (MyASUS), HP (HP Support Assistant or BIOS), Dell (Dell Power Manager), MSI (MSI Center). In the Start menu search bar, search for your brand’s name to quickly find the correct support program.
  • Open the battery management program

Open your manufacturer’s utility. Here, we’ll use HP as an example: for HP, you’ll find the setting in the BIOS. Restart your laptop and repeatedly press the Escape key or F10 during startup to open the BIOS. In Power or Battery Health Manager, look for an option such as Maximize Battery Health Manager and enable it.
  • Restart (if necessary)

After adjusting the setting, it may be necessary to restart your laptop for the setting to be applied.

Your laptop will now stop charging once the set limit is reached. This helps keep the battery temperature low and extend the battery’s lifespan, especially if you frequently keep your laptop charger plugged in.
