How to fix a touchpad in Windows 11

If your touchpad suddenly stops working in Windows, you can try the steps below to troubleshoot the problem and fix the touchpad in Windows 11. Use an external mouse for this.

  • Update drivers

    Right-click the Windows icon and go to Device Manager. Open Mice and other pointing devices by double-clicking. Then, right-click each device in the list and choose Update driver. Next, select Search automatically for drivers and repeat this for all devices in this category.

  • Update touchpad

    In Device Manager, go to Human Interface Devices and find a device named Touchpad. Right-click it and choose Update driver. Then select Search automatically for drivers.

  • Choose driver

    If the touchpad still does not work after the first two steps, right-click the touchpad again under Human Interface Devices and choose Update driver. Select Browse my computer for drivers and then Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer. Choose the correct touchpad model and click Next.

  • Remove and install touchpad

    If none of the above steps work, you can reinstall the touchpad. Right-click the touchpad under Human Interface Devices and choose Uninstall device. Then go to Action at the top and click Scan for hardware changes. Windows will automatically reinstall the driver.
