Synology Introduces Compact NAS Systems DS725+ and DS425+

Synology Introduces Compact NAS Systems DS725+ and DS425+

Synology Expands Its NAS System Range with DS725+ and DS425+, Immediately Available. The Synology DS225+ Is Also Shown at Computex but Is Expected Later This Year. All Three Are Suitable for Small Offices.

The Main Upgrades for the Synology DS725+ (2 HDD “s) and DS425+ (4 HDD” s) Are a 2.5GbE Network Port and an Additional 1GbE RJ-45 Connection. They Also Support M.2 NVMe SSDs, Which Can Be Used for SSD Caching or Fully Flash-Based Storage.

The Synology DS725+ Is Expandable with a DX525 Expansion Unit, Bringing the Total Number of Hard Drives to Seven. This Allows for a Maximum Storage Capacity of 140 TB of Data. The DS425+ Cannot Be Expanded. You’ll Have to Make Do with the Four Slots in the Device, Which Amounts to a Maximum of 80 TB of Storage.

Both Systems Require Compatible Hard Drives to Install the DSM Operating System. Synology Uses Its Own Compatibility List and Thoroughly Tests Its Systems to Ensure Long-Term Reliability.

Only Synology Drives Welcome

Synology Provides a Compatibility List Consisting Exclusively of Its Own Drives. All “plus” NAS Systems from Now on Will Be Limited in Terms of Drive Compatibility. Synology Is Following the Line of the DS925+ That Was Released Earlier This Year and the Recently Announced Synology DS1825+ and DS1525+.

At This Moment, There Is No Place for NAS Drives from Other Brands. There Is a Certification Process, but So Far, Manufacturers Are Not Offering “Synology-Certified” Drives.

Synology Justifies This Choice by Delivering More Reliable Performance with Its Own Hard Drives. It Maintains Control Over Future Firmware Updates, Which in the Past Has Caused Some Systems to Crash According to the Brand.

Those Migrating from an Earlier Synology NAS Can Still Bring Their “old” Hard Drives. Expanding the Storage Pool Afterwards Can Only Be Done with Synology Disks. A New Start Must Be Made with Synology Disks.

Specifications and Availability

The Synology DS725+ Has an AMD Ryzen R1600 Inside, 4 GB DDR4 ECC RAM (Expandable to 32 GB), and Space for Two Hard Drives. Theoretical Read and Write Speeds Are 276 MB/s and 224 MB/s Respectively.

The Larger Synology DS425+ Has an Intel Celeron J4125 on Board and Space for Four Hard Drives. You Get 2 GB DDR4 Standard, Expandable to a Maximum of 6 GB. Theoretical Read and Write Speeds Are 278 MB/s and 281 MB/s Respectively.

Like Every Plus Model in the DS Series from Synology, a Three-Year Warranty Period Applies.

Both Systems Are Available Now. The Recommended Prices for the Synology DS725+ and DS425+ Are Not Yet Available at This Time.

Synology DS225+ also Lurking around the Corner

At Computex, We Also Saw the Synology DS225+ for the First Time. It Is Essentially Identical to the DS425+, Except That There Is Only Room for Two Hard Drives. Theoretical Read and Write Speeds Are 281 MB/s and 217 MB/s Respectively.

It Is Currently Unclear When We Can Expect the Synology DS225+. The DS224+ Was Only Launched Last Year. There’s a Good Chance That the Successor Will See the Light of Day Later in the Year.
