Microsoft experiments with reduced taskbar for tablet mode in Windows 11

Windows 11

Windows 11’s taskbar will soon be more responsive to tablet mode. Those who use their laptops as tablets will see only the most practical items appear. Widgets and emojis will also change.

Microsoft announces plans to make Windows 11’s taskbar suitable for tablet mode. Tests are currently underway with a taskbar that displays only important items. For example, the time, battery status, Wi-Fi connection and date remain visible.

During tablet mode, however, users can still click on the taskbar. Then a taskbar will appear higher than usual. This is meant to display the widgets, the Windows button, the search bar larger for easier clicking.

Further adjustments

Microsoft is additionally experimenting in the Dev channel with changes to widgets. As a result, more information and dynamic content will appear. The change is currently in the testing phase, so it is not yet certain that the features will roll out to all Windows 11 users. Over time, Microsoft plans to make the content responsive to the user.

In addition, Microsoft is testing 37 new emoji for Windows 11. Among others, a troll, beans and a melting face are in the test version. Finally, Windows 11 will help you select the most relevant windows for split-screen use. To do so, Snap Assist will suggest the three most recently closed Microsoft Edge tabs. It is possible to adjust the number of suggested tabs yourself in Settings > System > Multitasking.
