Apple may want to debut M2 chip in four new Macs this year

According to rumors, Apple’s new M2 chip will debut in four new Mac devices this year: 13-inch MacBook Pro, Mac Mini, 24-inch iMac and a redesign of the MacBook Air.

According to Bloomberg, the Apple M2 chip will be a fraction faster than the current Apple M1 chip (not the Pro or Max variant). The chip shares the same 8-core chip architecture, but will have more graphics cores (from 7 or 8 to 9 or 10 cores). Apple is reportedly not planning Pro and Max variants of the new M2 chip until 2023.

He also shared another timeline with new Mac devices in March and then again in May or June. Numerous rumors point to an Apple event on March 8 with potential announcements of the 5G iPhone SE, 5G iPad Air and a new Mac. The event would also coincide with the launch of iOS 15.4 that adds mouthpiece support to Face ID.

2022 will be the year that all Intel-based Mac devices will be replaced by proprietary ARM chips. Every device has already seen an overhaul by now, with the exception of the Mac Pro. When that will get an upgrade to the latest chip remains to be seen. It’s possible Apple is waiting to release the Pro and Max versions of the new M2 chip, but then potentially won’t make the deadline at the end of 2022. Waiting to see what the future brings.
